Motor truck cargo insurance explained
Your truck is often carrying someone else’s most valuable asset.
Motor truck cargo insurance is designed to protect covered freight you transport against covered loss, damage or theft while it is in your care, custody or control, subject to the policy.
It is one of the coverages most often bought once and never revisited, which is a problem, because the freight a business hauls tends to change faster than its paperwork.

What the coverage is built to address
Cargo can be exposed to theft, collision, fire, incidents during loading or unloading, and other covered causes of loss. The policy sets out which of those it responds to and under what conditions.
What drives the limit
Coverage needs vary by cargo type, operation, contractual requirements and policy terms. A carrier moving electronics and a carrier moving building materials can run identical equipment and still need very different limits.
Why the language matters
Conditions and exclusions do a great deal of work in a cargo policy. Refrigeration breakdown, unattended vehicle provisions and commodity exclusions are all worth reading before a claim rather than during one.
Where cargo coverage sits in the wider program
Cargo coverage protects the freight. It does not protect the truck carrying it, and it does not respond to third-party liability. Those are separate coverages with separate limits.
Reviewing cargo alongside physical damage and auto liability gives a clearer picture of the whole exposure than looking at any one policy on its own.
