Commercial truck insurance: what coverage does a trucking business need?
A trucking business does not carry one risk. It carries several at once, and each is answered by a different policy.
The truck, the freight on it, the people driving it and the third parties around it are four separate exposures. A single product does not cover all four, which is why commercial trucking programs are usually assembled rather than bought off a shelf.
Understanding what each coverage is designed to do makes the whole program easier to evaluate, and makes renewal conversations considerably shorter.

Cover for the freight: motor truck cargo
Motor truck cargo insurance is designed to protect covered freight you transport against covered loss, damage or theft while it is in your care, custody or control. Limits are driven by what you actually haul and by what your contracts require.
Cover for the equipment: physical damage
Physical damage insurance addresses covered physical loss or damage to your trucks and trailers. For operators whose revenue depends on specific units being on the road, valuation and deductibles matter as much as the limit.
Cover for third parties: auto and general liability
Auto liability responds to covered claims where the insured is legally responsible for bodily injury or property damage arising from a covered auto operation. General liability addresses covered exposures that are not primarily tied to operating an insured commercial auto.
Cover for people: workers’ compensation and occupational accident
Workers’ compensation provides benefits for covered work-related injuries or illnesses to eligible employees, and is governed by state law. Occupational accident coverage provides specified benefits to eligible owner-operators or independent contractors. The two are not interchangeable.
Which of these your business needs depends on the equipment you run, the freight you move, your contracts and your workforce. Actual coverage in every case is governed by the issued policy, not by a summary like this one.
